 You thought it was over. You said it was over. You probably even hoped it was over.

But if your ex already shows all the signs of moving on with life-without you-you've got an uphill battle ahead. Still it's not a hopeless cause. Getting back with an ex is possible-and some people have even done it after years apart!

 Step One: Commit to Honesty.

Before you have any hope of getting back with an ex, you've got to commit to honesty-at least with yourself.

Even if your ex won't speak to you, make a commitment that you'll be truthful as you work through your thoughts and feelings about the relationship, what went wrong, and your part in the breakup.

Then focus on honestly assessing what you should have done differently-and what you can and will-do differently in the future if you get your ex back.

Step Three: Communicate The Change

Getting back with an ex won't happen if your ex doesn't know you: a) Want to get back together; and b) Are going to change the behavior that you realized contributed to the problem.

Notice, this doesn't say "going to try to change" because "trying" isn't a commitment and usually just results in no real change at all.

Please also notice this isn't the time when you go back to the ex with an ultimatum about how the ex needs to change.

This part is all about you and what you're going to do. And you need to assure your ex that this change will occur regardless of whether the two of you reconcile. You are making the change because you need to make it.

 This doesn't mean all the blame for the breakup necessarily rests on your shoulders.

 Be assured that getting back with an ex will require some change and compromise on both your parts or you will simply repeat the same mistakes that led to the breakup in the first place.

But at this point in the scenario, you are the one who wants to reconcile and you are the one who is taking the first step, so this moment is about what you are willing to do.

 At this point, you need to take whatever action is necessary to make the change-regardless of the response you get from your ex. Sometimes only seeing is believing.

And if promises have been made-and broken-in the past, words alone aren't going to convince your ex that this time will be any different. But action will definitely do the trick! So-to borrow a phrase from Nike-just do it!
